Ginebra is in trouble and they may not know it

Why would anyone doubt Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel? They have the best coach in the league, one of the promising superstars, one of the top 5 point guards, the most athletic giant in the league and one of the best glue guy in the league. And of course, the tallest player in the league is just nursing an injury.

So, how in the hell is Ginebra in trouble?

They look like a team that has already at his peak. Yes, they are still a legit title contender but in reality, no one in his right mind is looking at them as capable of beating San Miguel Beermen.

It is easy to say that, that is more about the once-in-a-generation firepower of the Beermen but look carefully at the line-up of Ginebra.

They have the pieces to go toe-to-toe with San Miguel. They have Gregzilla to stand against the Kraken. They have the King Eagle to fight against Standhardinger. They have Devance to match-up with the Spiderman. Earl Scottie Thompson is there to outhustle Chris Ross. LA Tenorio is there to play chess match with Alex Cabagnot.

And Marcio Lassiter? The elite skills of Sol Mercado can match the impact of a Lassiter.

But Ginebra never reached the level of San Miguel.

Why?

Because their biggest problem is an external thing. The injury bug. Without Greg Slaughter in the middle, San Miguel always have an advantage.

It is not as if Greg is the only victim. Joe Devance almost missed the entire 2018 Philippine Cup.

And their other problem is the other thing that is hard to control. Their main core may not develop anything impactful.

Japeth and Greg are already at their peak and in the past few seasons, they never showed any distinct development. Sol, LA, and Joe are already old.

In short, their only chance of internal development is Earl Scottie Thompson. And he alone will not be enough.

And the thing that should really worry them is the fact that Magnolia, TNT, Globalport, Rain or Shine and NLEX have potentials to develop into better teams.

Don't misquote me. I said potential. I never said that it is a certainty.
