Trade Analysis of PHX-BGSM: Phoenix won the trade by a landslide

A professional basketball league is like a ladder for the franchises that are part of it. Reaching the top is a step-by-step process. You can jump two steps once in a while but there is also the chance that you will slide down.

When Phoenix traded Jeff Chan to Ginebra for BGSM's 2018 1st round pick, they just made two steps upward.

Phoenix is not reaching the top of that ladder this conference and in the 2018 Governors' Cup. You can already write that down. I can even bet a hundred thousand that they will also not win any of the three crowns in the 2019 season.

So, what is the best thing for them to do? Get young players to develop. And maybe, lose some games to improve their 2018 draft position.

They accomplished that in this trade.

Jeff Chan is playing well with them. He is tallying 11.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 35% 3FG per game.

By trading him, Phoenix just lost a big part of their offense and defense. Which means more Ls would come their way.

Losses have a positive impact on their draft position. If they end up with one of the two worst record this conference, they are now on track for the #2 pick.

And the way 2018 is shaping up. It may have at least five players with the potential of becoming franchise players.

Then, they also add another 1st round pick. There is a chance that the top of the 2018 draft will be loaded with wings and guards.

Which mean, bigs can be available in the middle and that is a huge need for Phoenix.

The last thing that you need to realize was the value that they gave up for Jeff Chan. They exchanged Mark Borboran and their 2020 2nd for him in August, 2017.

Less than a year later, they got a 1st round selection in return. Which means, they managed to turn Mark Borboran and their 2020 2nd round pick for a #6 to #10 pick of the 2018 draft.

Amazing.
