Am I crazy to even come out with that idea? How can that even be possible if all the UAAP stars, save the foreign players, are aiming to reach the Philippine Basketball Association?
Starting from last week up to this week, three events/series are dominating the basketball universe in the Philippines.
The first one is the UAAP playoffs where University of the Philippines finally reached the Finals after 32 years.
The second one is the fifth window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifier wherein our Team Pilipinas was upset by Kazakhstan and Iran.
The last one? Yes. The 2018 Governors' Cup Finals between Magnolia Hotshots and Alaska Aces.
I know that you felt it. Just by reading those three, it was pretty obvious that the last one is the most boring. Yes. It has the least hype.
The reason?
Simple. PBA Finals is a common thing and not an event that is worth bending your schedule or even your attention!
And yet the PBA management is still beholden by this ridiculous belief that Filipinos need basketball all throughout the year!
It is true but it did not say that that year-round basketball should be provided by the PBA! The craving of the Filipino fans for basketball for 12 months is also filled by their local leagues and tournaments!
UAAP understand that. They understand that the moments matter more than quantity. Even though the popularity of UAAP is soaring him, they never talked about stretching their tournament calendar.
Why? Because by maintaining its shortness, it becomes a must-watch tournament every year.
The PBA? It is a constant thing already. Part of the daily sports-grind in the country. The reality is, only the hardcore fans are with the PBA all throughout the year.
Let this fact sink in. PBA will never have the drama of having a team in the finals that missed it for 32 years. Why? Because they have 3 finals a year.
For UAAP. That storyline just created a brewing star in Paul Desiderio.
