Remember the glory days of De La Salle in the late 1990s and early part of 2020? Wherein they manufactured the best superstar shooting guards in the college hoops, which will eventually translate to the PBA?
I am talking about Renren Ritualo, Mac Cardona and Joseph Yeo. That list was supposed to have James Yap, too!
James provided a glimpse of it again in the 2OT podcast with Carlo Pamintuan and Magoo Marjon. According to James, he regularly practices in DLSU during school breaks in his high school years. He really expected that he will end up in La Salle.
But it did not happen. He said that his uncle talked to the management of the college and a deal was not signed.
There is a good chance that the camp of James was the one who may have back-out from going to DLSU because James said that in his final year in high school, he had a realization that people there were different.
The story that James was about to sign with DLSU was confirmed by coach Franz Pumaren. He revealed that DLSU even helped in the nose operation of James because he was having a hard time breathing.
So, we can see that DLSU is committed to having a James Yap. Unfortunately for DLSU, it did not happen and he ended up in UE and became a legend there, bagging also a UAAP MVP.
I am pretty sure though that the history of the PBA will be very different if James played in DLSU. Knowing DLSU, he may not have been allowed to enter the PBA with one-year eligibility left.
So, imagine if he entered the 2005 draft instead of 2004. Imagine if he was connected to the DLSU legends instead of those from UE.
