PBA Analysis: Can Phoenix become the Golden State of the PBA?

After watching how the Golden State Warriors managed to create a short-run dynasty of unknown players, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green did not recognize as a big 3 before their ascent as a team, I started dreaming of a team that will push the boundaries of three-point shooting in the PBA.

Finally, I found one in Phoenix. Actually, TNT was also a good candidate last season.

This year though, Phoenix will double down with their three-point shooting. They will double-down that even Vic Manuel, arguably the best post scorer in the PBA and Larry Muyang, their 1st round pick, will shoot from beyond the arc.

That means that the main core rotation of Phoenix will all shoot from beyond the arc. With Matthew Wright basically mimicking the effect of a Stephen Curry due to his size for a shooter who can knock it down off-the-dribble.

I think this is an excellent decision. Three-point shooting is no doubt the best equalizer against talent. Talent-wise, Phoenix is way below against the San Miguel Corporation teams and even the MVP group squads.

But if they can have a  five-man-out squad for the entirety of the game, it will create an offense that has never been seen in the league.

We all saw Calvin Abueva prospered with the spacing that Phoenix provided. He was back as the Beast. He was again a mythical team candidate.

This season could even be better with a much better point guard in Chris Banchero and with a much better depth.

Can they become a version of the GSW in the PBA?

I hope, they will.
