I will be lying if I say that the 2021 Philippine Cup finals between TNT Tropang Giga and Magnolia Hotshots were not disappointing.
I thought I was going to witness a tight match, just like the San Miguel Beermen-TNT extravaganza in the semifinals.
Magnolia was outmatched. TNT was able to get a big lead early in the game and Magnolia was not capable of coming back.
And you know what was their biggest problem?
It was still their three-point shooting. They ended up as the most efficient three-point shooting team and they managed to keep that up to the semifinals.
Numbers finally catch up to them in the finals. It helps a lot that TNT actually has the most hardworking guard defensive unit in the league.
Magnolia knocked 29 out of the 100 three-pointers attempt in the finals. That 29% shooting and 5.8 three-pointers made will not be enough to win a Finals series.
It did not help that Paul Lee was not 100%. Lee is their main threat from beyond the arc and his highest mark in the series was 21 points.
So, how should Magnolia solve this problem?
