PBA Controversy: Asaytono should be part of the 40 PBA Greatest!

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has seen many great players grace its courts. However, the exclusion of Nelson Asaytono, one of the league’s top scorers, from the PBA’s 40 Greatest Players list has sparked controversy.

In a recent episode of the YouTube channel PBA Motoclub Team Amazing, several PBA Greats and Legends were asked if they believed Asaytono deserved to be in the top 40. Mac Cardona, Marlo Aquino, Ranidel de Ocampo, Gherome Ejercito, Allan Caidic, and Willie Miller all agreed that Asaytono should have been included. De Ocampo even suggested that Asaytono should be in the top 25, while Miller believed that Asaytono should have been automatically included in the Top 40, even before him. Aquino and Caidic went as far as to say that they would be willing to give up their spots for Asaytono.

Asaytono’s career was not without controversy. Despite being ranked fifth in the PBA’s all-time scoring list with 12,268 points, he was not included in the PBA’s 40 Greatest Players of All Time. The primary reason cited for his exclusion is that he did not win the MVP award. This has been a point of controversy, as many believe that Asaytono’s contributions to the sport and his impressive record should have earned him a spot on the list.

Despite these controversies, Asaytono’s legacy in the PBA is undeniable. He remains one of the most influential players in the league’s history. His exclusion from the Top 40 list has sparked discussions about the criteria used to select the greatest players and whether these criteria truly reflect a player’s impact on the sport.

As the PBA prepares to select its Top 50 Greatest Players, the question remains: Will Nelson Asaytono finally find his place among the PBA’s greatest?
