PBA Controversy: John Amores fired shots and thankfully, MISSED!

John Amores' recent shooting incident has cast a long shadow over his already troubled basketball career. After a heated argument following a pick-up game in Lumban, Amores was caught on CCTV firing a gun at another man, a shocking escalation of violence. This comes after his notorious 2022 NCAA brawl, where he attacked several players from De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, leading to his indefinite ban from the league.

Despite that, NorthPort took a gamble on him in the 2023 PBA Draft, hoping he could turn things around. Yet this latest incident, which culminated in attempted murder charges, leaves no room for a third chance.

The PBA and NorthPort need to make it clear: players involved in criminal behavior have no place in professional sports. The league’s reputation is at stake. Not only does Amores’ pattern of violence hurt the PBA’s image, but it also sets a dangerous precedent if it’s not dealt with firmly.

What makes this even more alarming is that Amores was given a lifeline by NorthPort. After his ban in the NCAA, the team believed in redemption, and yet Amores squandered that with even graver behavior. The PBA has to draw a line, and banning Amores from the league indefinitely seems to be the only logical course of action.

This situation also raises broader questions about talent versus character in professional sports. While Amores has shown flashes of potential, his repeated lapses in judgment signal that he's a liability on and off the court. Allowing him to return, after a shooting incident no less, would send the wrong message.

At this point, both the league and NorthPort have a duty to ensure that Amores doesn’t return. This isn’t just about punishing one player; it's about protecting the integrity of the PBA and sending a clear message: violence, especially of this nature, has no place in the sport.
