PBA Trade Rumors: Magnolia and NLEX Top Trade Assets!

The dust has settled on the 2025 PBA Philippine Cup Playoffs quarterfinals, and for both the Magnolia Hotshots and the NLEX Road Warriors, the outcome is a familiar sting of elimination. Like a broken record from the 90s band Introvoys, the same narrative seems to repeat for these franchises: solid regular seasons often culminating in early playoff exits. Magnolia, despite flashes of brilliance, couldn't overcome their playoff hurdle, while NLEX, even with their dynamic backcourt, ultimately fell short of a deeper run. As they look towards the next conferences, the question for both teams becomes: how do they break free from this cycle? The answer might lie in leveraging their most valuable trade assets.

Magnolia: The Veteran Presence of Paul Lee

For the Magnolia Hotshots, Paul Lee remains a significant piece. The "Lethal Weapon," at 36 years old, still possesses the ability to take over games with his scoring prowess. In the recent Philippine Cup, Lee averaged 11.4 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in 13 games, with notable performances including a 27-point explosion. His leadership and experience are undeniable, but his age and substantial contract could also make him an attractive trade chip for a team looking for a proven veteran scorer.

Magnolia has a history of building around a core, and while Lee has been a vital part of that, his current stage of career presents a unique opportunity. If the Hotshots can package Lee, still capable of delivering prime moments, for a younger superstar talent or a combination of high-upside players and draft picks, they could significantly revamp their roster. Such a move, while potentially unpopular with a segment of their fanbase, could be the catalyst Magnolia needs to shed its "good but not great" image and truly contend for championships in the coming years. A successful trade of Lee for a centerpiece would undeniably be a win for Magnolia, signaling a strategic shift towards sustained success.

NLEX: The Dependable Kevin Alas

Over at NLEX, Kevin Alas stands out as their prime trade asset. While a consistent and reliable guard, the emergence of Xyrus Torres as a potential preferred running mate alongside Robert Bolick could shift Alas's role within the team. Torres, a rookie who showed flashes of brilliance with 12.7 points per game in the Philippine Cup, including a 28-point outburst, offers NLEX a younger, high-scoring guard option.

Alas, at 33 years old, continues to be a solid contributor, averaging 7.7 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 11 games during the Philippine Cup. He's a veteran who can still contribute significantly as a starter on many PBA teams. However, NLEX might find more value in trading him while he still commands a respectable return. By treating Alas as a starting-caliber player in trade negotiations, NLEX could acquire a package that addresses other positional needs, injects more youth into their lineup, or secures assets for future development. This move would allow NLEX to fully commit to a Bolick-Torres backcourt while acquiring pieces that could ultimately elevate them beyond their current quarterfinal ceiling.
