2025 PBA Draft News: Phoenix is targeting a center!

The Phoenix Fuel Masters, armed with the coveted second overall pick in the upcoming PBA Season 50 draft, have their sights set on a specific type of player. As new coach Willy Wilson made clear, the team is in desperate need of a "true center," a player who can provide a formidable presence in the paint and stand his ground against the likes of June Mar Fajardo, Justine Baltazar, and Justin Arana.

This strategic focus, while understandable, carries a significant risk. Coach Wilson’s desire for a big man is a nod to his own playing days and the value of a Dorian Peña-type player—a physical, defensive-minded center who embraces a tough, low-maintenance role. The appeal is clear: a player who can rebound, defend, and provide a reliable anchor on the interior, allowing the team's other players to flourish.

However, the concern among Phoenix fans is that this specific search might lead the team to make a reach with the #2 overall pick. The draft is a balance of need and value, and a team picking so high must take the best player available, regardless of position. If the consensus best player is not a center, drafting a big man simply to fill a need would be a classic draft mistake.

The fear is that Phoenix might pass on a more talented or higher-potential player at another position—perhaps a dynamic guard or a versatile forward—to select a big man who might not be a top-tier talent. While the goal is to find a player who can "at least provide some type of resistance" against the league's top bigs, the #2 pick is meant for a player who can be a franchise cornerstone, a player who can provide more than just resistance.

Coach Wilson's vision is a throwback to a style of play that has proven successful in the past, but the modern PBA game is increasingly dominated by versatility and skill. While a true center is certainly valuable, using a top-2 pick to find a role player, no matter how good he is, can be seen as a sub-optimal use of a premium asset. The hope for Phoenix fans is that the player they are targeting is indeed worthy of the #2 pick and not just a "reach" to fill a pressing need. The success of this draft hinges on whether Wilson's target can be a difference-maker on the level of the top talent, not just a solid rotational big.
