With Jamie Malonzo officially on his way to the Japan B.League, Barangay Ginebra is facing an immediate and significant void on their roster. The initial plan of Coach Tim Cone is to likely redistribute Malonzo's minutes to the team's current bench players, such as Jayson David, Ralph Cu, and Jeremiah Gray. While this strategy is a logical and commendable way to develop in-house talent, the reality is that the potential of these players is largely known. They bring solid contributions and a hard-working mentality, but can they truly replicate the elite athleticism, two-way versatility, and scoring punch that Malonzo provided? That's a huge ask.
To maintain their status as a legitimate contender, Ginebra may need to look outside the organization for a player who can more closely fill that role. Here are three players the Gin Kings should be targeting to replace their high-flying forward.
3. Joshua Munzon
Joshua Munzon would bring a much-needed injection of defensive tenacity to Ginebra. The former top overall pick has carved out a reputation as a relentless defender and an athletic wing who can guard multiple positions. While his scoring has been a bit inconsistent, his ability to get into passing lanes and create fast-break opportunities is undeniable. For a team that prides itself on defense, Munzon would be a perfect fit for Ginebra's system. He would provide the team with a reliable two-way player who can help fill the void left by Malonzo on the defensive end.
2. Leonard Santillan
Leonard Santillan is a player who plays the same position as Malonzo and is also a very good player in his own right. The Rain or Shine forward has been a steady and reliable contributor for the Elasto Painters, known for his physicality, inside-outside game, and high basketball IQ. He is a tough matchup for opposing teams and has a similar skillset to Malonzo, making him a perfect fit for Ginebra's system. However, acquiring him would be a challenge, as he is currently under a long-term contract with Rain or Shine, and the Elasto Painters are unlikely to let go of one of their key players without a significant trade package in return.
1. Kai Ballungay
Kai Ballungay is a name that has been whispered in the rumor mill, and for good reason. There are semi-credible sources suggesting that Ginebra is interested in acquiring him, and he would be a great target for them. Ballungay, a former collegiate standout, has shown flashes of brilliance with the Phoenix Fuel Masters, demonstrating a versatile skill set that includes shooting, rebounding, and athleticism. He is a natural fit for Ginebra's forward-heavy lineup and would provide the team with a young, talented player who has a ton of potential. He could also be a long-term solution for Ginebra and could be the heir apparent to their aging frontcourt.
