SEABA Gilas 12 - Did they chose the right 12?

(c) PBA Media Bureau
Coach Chot wants to make sure that we maintain our supremacy in basketball here in Southeast Asia. So, he is going all-in in SEABA.

The moment the final 12 was announced, the discussion about Gilas snubs started to heat up. Are they warranted? Let us see.

First things first, there was no incorrect choice. Why? Basketball is a team sport and you can succeed in different ways. Coach Chot Reyes has his way of winning basketball and he surely knows the right players that will fit the system.

So, what am I going to do here? I will just categorize the 12 players, chosen.

THE CORE
Jayson Castro
Andray Blatche
June Mar Fajardo
Japeth Aguilar
Calvin Abueva

In terms of their skills and their fit to the scheme that coach Chot loves, these five are shoo-ins. To question the inclusion of one of them will be idiotic.

THE ELITE
Raymond Almazan
Terrence Romeo

Coach Chot may need to adjust a little bit for Almazan and Romeo. Raymond and Terrence are highly skilled that coach Chot will need to make the adjustment in his system, to maximize them, Almazan will be very intriguing because of his ability to hit three-point shots.

THE PROMISING STUDS
Troy Rosario
Matthew Wright
Allein Maliksi

With Mac Belo out, Matthew Wright had taken  the lead for the Rookie of the Year award. Coach Chot is surely salivating to see a multi-skilled offensive wing with rebounding prowess in SEABA. Maliksi, on the other hand, could blossom into a consistent flame-thrower that coach Chot never had in the past.

The inclusion of this three should not be questioned but their inexperience could deter them from being productive in SEABA.

THE DEBATABLE
Roger Pogoy

Jio Jalalon

Again, coach Chot knows better than us. I am not questioning their viability to represent Philippines but I am confident I can win a debate in favor of Ferrer and CBC over them.

So, Pogoy and Jalalon better prove that coach Chot made the right choice to pick them.
