Five Most Underrated Players in the 2017 Gov. Cup

PBA fans and the PBA media is always affected by the limelight. The more popular the player is, the more resounding are his good performances. As the popular players shine, we also have this underrated players that are being very impactful in the background.

Here are the top five most underrated players this conference.

#5 Gabe Norwood
We all know him as the guy that Rain or Shine relies heavily on the things that the people don't appreciate. He continue to be the master of that craft as he pours 10.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.7 steals.

He can stop anybody. Actually, he is the shackle of our national team. In short, he is the best one-on-one defender in the country. Other than that, he has been the best offensive player of the Elasto Painters. Yes! He is not the one putting the ball into the hoop, most of the time, but when he is on the floor, his team is scoring 115.4 points per 100 possessions.

#4 Sol Mercado
Actually, he has been underrated in the last two to three years. With Tenorio and Thompson, Sol has been relegated into a bench role. But, it is a very important one for their team. Coach Tim has molded him into his best defensive guard.

Actually, Sol's confidence has open the door for him to defend even the imports! That defensive versatility is vital in an import-laden conference. I don't want to reveal his counting stats because it will be very ironic.

#3 Matthew Wright
Phoenix has found their star and it seems, nobody is taking note. Wright is the fourth best local scorer this conference with 17.8 points, 38.3% FG and 41.4% 3FG. The guy is still more of a volume scorer but he can really deliver.

Other than his scoring, he also grabs 5.8 rebounds and dishes 2.6 dimes per game. Unfortunately, Phoenix will bow out of this conference so we need to wait for the 2018 Philippine Cup to maybe see a potent young scoring franchise star, in the playoffs.

#2 Chris Newsome
Meralco Bolts as a whole is underrated. If I ask you which team currently stands with the 2nd best record in the league, will you answer Meralco Bolts? The growth of Newsome has been the real anchor to the success of the Bolts.

Chris has been filling up the stat-sheet, in all their nine games. He scored double-figure in seven of the nine games, grabbed four or more rebounds and assisted four or more shots in each game! His versatility made the transition of Durnham and the breakout of Amer, possible.

#1 Ian Sangalang
Do you remember the guy that was drafted behind Greg Slaughter? Yes, the guy that happened to be injured in his sophomore year? He seems to be back and better. His feel inside the paint is back, pushing his points per game to 13.5 points in 53.6%  shooting.

The guy is also banging bodies inside and grabbing 6.9 boards per game. If Star wants to get far this conference, keep their best local paint scorer on target is a key.
