ReGrading PBA Trade: August 2015 - Barako-Ginebra Trade

Buried in the piles of lopsided trade that Commissioner Narvasa accepted, was a trade that it is not even felt today. But, this trade could have been at par with the SMB-Kia trade and the TNT-Blackwater exchange.

Ginebra Trade:
Josh Urbiztondo
Emman Monfort
Jens Knuttel

Barako Trade:
Nico Salva
2016 1st (Jammer Jamito)

TEAM GRADE
Barako Bull = F

Philippine basketball will never get short in supply of point guards. So, what a terrible idea to trade a young Salva and a 1st round pick for three points guards that do not possess star potential!

After two-and-a-half years, Urbiztondo and Jens Knuttel were out of the league. Emman Monfort is now with NLEX, but I will not be willing to bid if he will still be in the PBA in the next 2019 season.

Ginebra = C

It was very unfortunate for Ginebra that the 2016 draft was turned into a Gilas draft. If it wasn't, they could have ended with a Matthew Wright, Mac Belo or Jio Jalalon.

At the very least, they got two young forwards which are harder to find in the league. Jammer Jamito is still with them, being groomed by coach Tim and his staff.

OVERALL

This could have been a very lopsided trade that is worthy of a lot of hate if the 2016 draft was not turned into a Gilas draft, where the PBA board decided for the pick of each ball club. Overall, Ginebra still got Kevin Ferrer in that Gilas draft.

But, imagine if it was a normal draft and Ginebra got that 3rd pick. They could have ended up with Arnold Van Opstal or Jio Jalalon or even Matthew Wright. Wright and Jalalon are already starting caliber players in the league. AVO is still a young athletic giant who could turn into something special.

And remember, in that draft they also have the 9th pick. So, they could have drafted two of Jalalon, Wright, AVO, Bryan Cruz, Russell Escoto, Ferrer, Pogoy and Tolomia!

The depth of the Kings could have been much better if that draft was normal.

The PBA will be a very different league today if that Gilas draft never happened.
