The Decision of Kobe Paras to enter the NBA Draft is Bad But...

The Philippine basketball world was shocked when one of their prodigies decided to turn pro, so early.

Even with his brimming athleticism and highlight abilities, nobody of his right mind anticipated Kobe to be prepared to be a pro, just a year out of college.

But, the kid has decided to take the challenge of becoming a professional basketball player, now.

"It's time for me to shape my own destiny in an even bigger wave. I know it seems like a giant step that no one was expecting, but that is what makes this one of the greatest announcements of my life."

Those were the words of Kobe, in explaining his big decision.

And I think his decision is a bad one.

Any Filipino can say that they are turning pro and will be eligible for the NBA. And that resolve will also be their biggest proclamation in their life.

Nothing big about that.

It is a bad decision because, it is kinda obvious, reading between the lines, that this decision will be the reason for him to put the best work and training of his life.

Why just now?

If he really wants to be successful as early as possible. If he really wants to be an NBA player, as early as possible. Why did not he put more work, effort and time to build his skills when he was younger?

Entering college, he was only a 3-star recruit. The highest level is 5-star. And those 5-star recruits are not even assured of an NBA career. A lot of them will still fail in the college level.

Just look at Jahlil Okafor, the #3 pick of the 2015 NBA draft. He was highly touted entering college and entering the NBA. Look at him now. It seems like he will not even last for five years in the NBA.

Making that decision is easy. Kobe Paras is now looking like an underdog fighting the giant waves, just as he said. But this is not a fantasy or a movie, that assures the underdog to win.

This is reality. And only a few can really succeed in overcoming those big waves.

BUT

Even with all of that, I FULLY SUPPORT Kobe Paras.

Why?

Because that is his dream. That is his life. And if he fails, at least he tried. At least, we will never need to question ourselves in the future of, what if Kobe Paras turned pro early?

The kid stood up the earliest possible, and he knows the weight of his decision. Is it not as if, Philippines will be discredited if he do not make it. Nobody is expecting him to make it.

But, what if he accomplish the impossible?

  2. He's now in Japan B League as a pro and making good stats including his debut with Niigata Albirex BB.

Paras finished with a team-high 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including a very efficient 4-of-6 clip from downtown, along with 4 assists and 2 steals.

Not in the NBA maybe but who knows it could be a step towards his ultimate dream, an every basketball journeyman's goal.

The Japan B League is not an NBA caliber league atleast not yet buti most of its imports are former NBA players so, you will expect a class A game.
