Was Blackwater right in Firing coach Leo Isaac?

The management of Blackwater Elite made a shocking move of firing coach Leo Isaac after a rough start in the 2018 Commissioner's Cup.

What made it more impactful is the fact that they also said goodbye to their team manager, Johnson Martinez.

Letting go of both the manager and the coach means the decision was solely made by the management.

So, is it the right move?

First things first, let us dissect their performance in their first three games this conference. They lost by an average margin of 17.3 points.

The 28 points defeat at the hand of Columbia Dyip is the most disgusting. Is there a part of their performance in those three games that we can point to coach Leo Isaac as the main culprit?

I saw two.

The first one is the super high number of turnovers. They averaged 32.7 in those three games and they were pretty consistent with it because they recorded 27, 28 and 33!

Turnovers are one of the numbers that the coaching staff can impact the most. A lot of the turnovers can be a product of a low-quality flow and scheme that the coaching staff created.

It may also be a sign that the coach is not already in-control with his team as the players start to make a lot of wrong decisions.

The second number is the average lead that they are providing to their opponents in the 1st quarter. After the first 12 minutes, they are already 10.7 points behind.

The 1st quarter and the 4th quarter are the most vital quarters for a coach. The 1st quarter is the one that a coach controls the most. Before a game, coaches make gameplans for them to win it.

So, if they are playing that bad in the 1st quarter, it means the coach's preparation was bad.

Overall, their performance on the floor is a good evidence that they should part ways with coach Leo. But, how about the development of his players?

JP Erram became of the top 15 players in the league, under his tutelage. They also found Mike DiGregorio and he is rolling with them.

Other than those two, I don't think they did great with their other young cagers. Mac Belo is playing well but to say that he has met the hype is wrong. Even Allein Maliksi has failed to totally blossom into a legit scorer.

CONCLUSION
I think they made the right decision. It doesn't mean though that coach Leo is a bad coach. He made some great decisions regarding their style of play. Like their focus on rebounding and a very good defensive scheme.

But for the Elite to reach the elite level, they need someone who can help them on the offensive end. Coach Bong Ramos could be that guy.

  1. So this is where you ended up after Sportsblog. Personally, I thought Leo Isaac should have had the axe a season ago. Isaac is not that bad of a coach but Blackwater won less than 20 percent of their games during their first two seasons.

That's enough to warrant an axe.
