Trade Analysis - PHX-BGSM: Jeff Chan may not be the answer

Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel has two missions. They want to get a three-peat in the Governors' Cup and they want to stop the grandslam bid of San Miguel Beermen.

So, they went and get the services of Jeff Chan. In exchange, they loss their lone 1st round pick in the upcoming 2018 rookie draft.

Did they do the right move?

Let us examine.

First, I think the move is already late for the 2018 Commissioner's Cup. They are currently on the middle, battling for their lives. They cannot spare any game to inject Jeff Chan into the system.

It is not as if Ginebra, currently, have a player with a role of shooting and stretching floor. If they have, Chan can easily takeover that role. Unfortunately, they do not have. Meaning, they may need to change a lot of their offensive scheme.

Especially on defense. Chan is more of a team defender. They cannot ask him to be a one-on-one stopper. He needs to master playing with his teammates for him to be effective on the defensive end.

Now, if we talk about the 2018 Governors' Cup, they should play more smoother. Justin Brownlee is already with them, so the new Ginebra team should have at least three games under their belt before the 3rd cup of the season.

In terms of value, I think Ginebra did fine. Their pick should fall around 6 to 10. And that range doesn't provide assurance that they will get a credible PBA player. Jeff Chan is already 34 years old, but he is still capable of stretching the floor and doing the other things at a passable level.

Lastly, is adding him enough to overcome San Miguel, especially in the conference that they are trying to defend?

If they play Chan in their starting line-up, one of Joe Devance, LA Tenorio and Japeth Aguilar will need to be on the bench.

Is the value of his shooting enough to compensate for the playmaking and shooting ability of LA, playmaking, size, defense and versatility of Devance and the size, rim-running and defense of Japeth?

The answer is no.

Now, if he will only play around 10-15 minutes, they will fail to maximize his ability to stretch the floor.

Value-wise, Ginebra was not wrong in making this deal. But, they should not expect that they now have a team capable of defeating San Miguel Beermen in a seven-game series.
