Is it time for coach Yeng to be the permanent coach of Gilas?

The Australia-Philippines brawl may have changed the coaching landscape of the national team. Coach Yeng Guiao will now handle the national team in the next window of the FIBA qualifier.

He will be the coach of the national team against Iran on September 13 and Qatar on September 17, 2018.

Coach Yeng Guiao did not accept the job right away and even asked for a few days to think about it but he cannot say no to Mr. Panlilio and Mr. Pangilinan.

He also made it clear that he is only substituting for coach Chot Reyes who will serve a one-game suspension.

One thing though that coach Yeng emphasized was the fact that Gilas is playing for a much bigger prize than his NLEX team in the PBA.

So, a question pops into my mind.

What if coach Yeng do well in his stint with Gilas?

In this 2018 Asian Games, I do not think they need to be the champion for us to consider it a success. The lack of preparation and the controversies surrounding the formation of the team makes a semifinals appearance enough for us to be happy.

With Jordan Clarkson on board, coach Yeng Guiao has become optimistic about our chances. Knowing his pessimism during the build-up of this tournament, we better believe him when he changes his tune.

I think coach Yeng will have more preparation time for the FIBA qualification games. Coach Yeng is known for maximizing players. So, maybe three weeks could be enough for him to create a team that can be capable of beating Iran and Qatar.

Imagine the reaction of the Filipino basketball enthusiasts if he accomplished those two things? Especially, if they see that his system is much better for international play.

Add the fact that Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas listen to Filipino fans. Can they resist the clamor for coach Yeng if coach Yeng succeeds in these two ventures?
