The best point guard this season is...

There is no question that the deepest position in the league is the point guard. It is the lone position where there is a surplus of starting caliber players.

Like Alex Cabagnot was forced to play the 2 because Chris Ross is there. Magnolia have three quarterbacks who can start in Mark Barroca, Jio Jalalon and Justin Melton.

So, one of the hardest question in the PBA is, who is the best point guard?

If we are only talking about this season. I think the answer is clear.

15.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 8.7 assists, 1.1 steals and 49% FG per game. That is the current statline of Chris Banchero.

Out of all the point guards, those who played the 1 with the majority of their minutes, Banchero is the only one who is shooting above 45% and producing 14 points or more.

The next best is Mark Barroca with 13.2 points and 52% FG per game.

He is the only PG who is averaging double-digits in points and more than 5 assists and 4 rebounds per game.

Of course, he was also the #1 in terms of assists. The 2nd highest average by a PG was the 6.8 of Jalalon.

Banchero is also #1 in assists in the Commissioner's Cup with 6.5. In both conferences, he averaged more assists than the imports! Those are testaments to his uncanny vision and accurate passing.

In the Philippine Cup, Banchero was not a fluke, either. He manufactured 11.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.7 steals and 49% FG per game.

In that conference, Alex Cabagnot could be the best with his 17.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. But, Alex' main problem all throughout the season was his efficiency. He failed to shoot better than 40% in the three conferences.

Skill-wise, Pringle should be the best point guard this season. But, Northport decided to play him more at the SG position than the 1.

Overall, playmaking is still the most important skill for a point guard and Banchero was the best in this season. Other than that, he was steady on all the other aspects, other than three-point shooting.

Banchero may not be a popular pick but he did what he needs to do this season.
