2018 PBA Draft Power Ranking 1.0: The best prospect in the draft is?

(c) PBA Media Bureau

The upcoming draft is shaping up to be very interesting. Three names are dominating the discussions and those are Bobby Ray Parks Jr., CJ Perez and Robert Bollick. They are the unanimous top 3 picks by analysts and fans.

Some big names who have put their name for the taking are Arvin Tolentino, Abu Tratter, Trevis Jackson and Bong Quinto.

Today, we will give you our top 12 prospects for the upcoming draft!

Just want to remind you of the difference of a power ranking and a mock draft. In a mock draft, you are trying to predict the picks of the teams. In a power ranking, you are ordering them according to their quality as a prospect.

#1 Bobby Ray Parks Jr.
I will be honest enough to say that the performance of Perez in the last two NCAA seasons made this decision much tougher. Parks though have proven himself in every aspect of the game, from offense to defense.

You may be a hater of Parks but I am hoping you remember that he is a legit scorer, playmaker, rebounder and defender. I forgot, he can also shoot.

#2 CJ Perez
Perez is a monster in defense. He averaged 3.3 steals in the 2018 NCAA season! Steals is a good indication of defensive instinct, tenacity and skills. With that high of a number, the projection for Perez as a defender is astronomical!

Other than his defense, he is also a solid offensive contributor. He averaged 18.7 points in 45% FG shooting. The biggest hole in his game is his outside shooting. If that develops, the Parks vs Perez discussion will be much tighter.

#3 Robert Bollick
Bollick's combination of size, shooting, playmaking and clutch shooting was again evident in their recent NCAA championship conquest. For the season, Robert manufactured 16.7 points, 50% FG, 33% 3FG, 5.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game.

A 6'1 point guard is hard to find. With that size, his path to becoming an average defender is shorter. Do not forget also that Bollick is capable of hitting 50 points.

#4 Arvin Tolentino
Skills. Yes, Arvin did not meet the hype that they showered him when he entered UAAP but the skill level was obviously high. For his final UAAP season, Arvin averaged 13.3 points, 44% FG, 42% 3FG, 5 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

Arvin is a legit three-point shooter which makes him a very versatile player, position wise. He is more of a 4 but he can also play the 3 and even the 5 if necessary.

#5 Abu Tratter
Size and athleticism matters in basketball. Tratter has those. Tratter did not have an eventful UAAP career but he did show enough skills to get one of the spots in Gilas 23 for 2023 pool. When I scouted him, I saw a player who is willing to do the little things that are not being quantified, thus not being recognized.

#6 J-Jay Alejandro
I hope you have not forgotten about Alejandro. He manufactured 16.6 points, 6.4 rebounds and 6.7 assists in his final UAAP season. Just like Bollick, Alejandro has a good size for a point guard and he is also a willing shooter.

#7 Bong Quinto
Quinto is another machine in terms of filling up the stat sheet! Bong recorded three triple-doubles in NCAA this year. He is basically in the same mold as Scottie Thompson. The difference between Scottie and Bong is the size and skill level. Thompson' skills were better when he entered the draft.

#8 Trevis Jackson
When Alex Cabagnot saw Trevis, he remembered someone. Yes. His teammates, Chris Ross. Now, the comparison was focused more on his quickness and explosiveness and what he can do on the offensive end.

If his defensive skills will catch up with that of Ross, Jackson can turn out to be a steal.

#9 Jayvee Mocon
Mocon was the best player of San Beda in the 2018 finals. He averaged 15.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in the finals. Mocon can play SF and PF but for him to really blossom, he needs to be more of a consistent shooter and he should develop his strength.

#10 Michael Calisaan
Calisaan is an undersize bigman who will try to force his way to PBA relevance. He was the 2018 NCAA All-star MVP when he registered 17 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists. It is encouraging that he knows how and when to make the right passes already. He needs to cultivate that and may even develop his handle.
