Team Pilipinas - Scottie Thompson should not be part of the final line-up

Coach Yeng Guiao revealed recently that he already has six players that are shoo-in for the final 12 line-up of our national team that will play in the upcoming FIBA Asian Qualifier window.

The two that he named were Jayson Castro and June Mar Fajardo. It was understandable because Castro's skillset for a point guard is still the most desirable and of course Fajardo is the best player in the country.

Last time, I explained why I think Greg Slaughter should not be part of our final line-up.

The next position that I scrutinized is the wing rotation that includes Matthew Wright, Marcio Lassiter, Scottie Thompson, Gabe Norwood, Troy Rosario and Arwind Santos.

As you can see, Rosario, Norwood and Santos can play some 4 so I will not be shocked if five of these players will be selected.

So, if we are talking about five players, who should get the cut?

I think it should be Thompson. Thompson can play some PG but we really do not need him to play the point because we will be having a loaded PG rotation.

He also lacks the primary skill that we need, which is shooting. Shooting is a skill that is needed by each player. The current modern basketball dictates that it is already bad if you have two non-shooters on the floor.

Why?

The spacing will be tight. If the spacing is tight, driving lanes will be hard to open-up. If driving lanes are not there, good shots will be hard to create. Without good shots, it will be hard to score.

Of course, Scottie's premium skill is rebounding. His rebounding is elite for a guard. I mean, even in International play, Thompson is a good rebounder.

But, do we need his rebounding if we will be bringing the tallest frontcourt in the history of our national team?

Because of that, I would rather use the roster spot for a player that can bring shooting or defense. I also think those two skills are the priorities of coach Yeng.
