2018 Offseason Trade Targets: SMB, Alaska, Rain or Shine, Meralco

(c) PBA Media Bureau

Even though there are already several trades in the books, it is not yet too late to examine each squad and see what they need to ask for.

As of today, only five teams have an official trade under their franchise this current offseason. They are San Miguel, Phoenix, NLEX, TNT and Blackwater.

So, seven teams have not made their moves yet.

San Miguel - Young forward
The addition of Terrence Romeo gave the Beermen another scoring piece. I am not sure though if they really need one.

Actually, with the outstanding firepower of the Beermen, it is hard to pinpoint any need for them.

That is why I decided to look at their future. With Romeo securing the future of their guard rotation, they may need to find a way to secure their forward position. It is not an immediate need but if they can do it this offseason, the better.

Alaska - Center who can rebound well
Alaska did the impossible in the recent 2018 Governors Cup primarily because of an import who covered their deficiencies pretty well. Now that Mike Harris will not be with them in the Philippine Cup, how about adding a center who is a very good rebounder?

Vic Manuel and Sonny Thoss, their two most used bigs are not above average rebounders. Thus, if they really want to compete in the upcoming conference, they need someone who can get a lot of boards.

The obvious target is Raymond Almazan. He will not only provide length but also the ability to hit threes. One under-the-radar possibility is Jay-R Reyes. He has the size and grit to help them in the rebounding department.

Rain or Shine - A scorer
With the depth of the Elasto Painters, it is hard to pinpoint a specific need for them. Until you realize that they do not have a consistent scorer in their line-up. James Yap and Maverick Ahanmisi can score but Yap is already old while Ahanmisi's style is more of a point guard.

Thus, getting a legit scorer, no matter what the position is, can be a good upgrade to their line-up. Some good options are Michael DiGregorio and Arwind Santos. Arwind Santos may not be at his prime already but in terms of carrying the scoring load, he is still capable.

One good trade that will also fulfill what I said for San Miguel is Javee Mocon for Arwind Santos and maybe a 2nd round pick to cover the age difference.

Meralco - A scoring bigman
Actually, they made a move last year to fill this. Unfortunately, Ranidel de Ocampo is not even 70% of his prime self. He missed a lot of games last season and has been negative for the Bolts when he played.

An available scoring big is hard to find in today's PBA. One possibility is another injury prone frontliner in Aldrech Ramos. He is not a very good scorer but with his shooting, he can open up the driving lanes for their guards.

They can still ask for Raymond Almazan but I really doubt if the Elasto Painters are even entertaining offers already.
