2019 Phil. Cup Power Ranking: Should the Beermen and Ginebra go down?

(c) PBA Media Bureau

Rain or Shine delivered a crucial win in Pangasinan last Saturday. TNT managed to sweep their two games slate for the week. And Columbian ended up with a 1-2 record for their three games in five days caravan!

How did that shake up the rankings? Let us see.

#12 Blackwater Elite (#12 Last Week)
Who is the top scorer of the Elite? Allein Maliksi? No. Mac Belo? No. Their top scorer so far is Roi Sumang who is averaging 16.0 points, 6.5 assists and 50% per game.

#11 Columbian Dyip (#11 Last Week)
Columbian is 2-2 and has pretty decent statistics. They are currently the 4th best in FG%, best in FT%, 4th in assists and 4th in turnovers. Dyip still has the least talented roster in the league but they are playing well.

#10 Meralco Bolts (#10 Last Week)
If there is a time to tank Orange Nation, this is it. The 2019 draft has the potential to be so rich in bigs that your team badly needs. A year of sacrifice could go a long way for your future.

#9 Alaska Aces (#7 Last Week)
Wait. Is Alaska having their own "Acenovela"? Is coach Alex Compton still their head coach? Or is the guy running their practices already appointed?

#8 NLEX Road Warriors (#9 Last Week)
With a better frontline this season, NLEX is my biggest dark horse this season. Just look at Marion Magat who is producing 9.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 36% 3FG per game.

#7 Phoenix Fuel Masters (#8 Last Week)
If Phoenix wins their next game against Blackwater Elite, I expect them to climb to the upper echelon of this ranking. They are the most dominant rebounding team so far, averaging 62.3 per game, 12 more than the 2nd best.

#6 North Port Batang Pier (#5 Last Week)
My other dark horse is the Batang Pier. Why? Check out the play of Moala Tautuaa. He averaged 17.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.0 steal, 67% FG and 50% 3FG per game in their first three matches. Is this the breakout season that we have been waiting for?

#5 Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (#4 Last Week)
Their tight victory against Ginebra is a good indicator of where the Elasto Painters is going. In that game, they outrebounded Ginebra and forced them to attempt only 12 long bombs.

#4 TNT Ka-Tropa (#6 Last Week)
TNT is finally clicking and it is working. They rely heavily on three-point shooting as they averaged 39.5 attempts per game. Overall, their 25% efficiency is not yet encouraging but they already began hitting their shots in their last two games and they ended up victorious.

#3 Magnolia Hotshots (#3 Last Week)
Magnolia will finally play their first game this season on Sunday. I am very interested to see the adjustments in their rotation with the return of Marc Pingris. Is Pingris still a starting caliber player? We will see.

#2 Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel (#2 Last Week)
Ginebra is below .500 in their first three games. Is there something to worry about? None, as long as coach Tim Cone is at the helm. Although, we should focus on Greg Slaughter who struggled in their first three games, shooting just 48% and turning the ball over, 4.0 times per game.

#1 San Miguel Beermen (#1 Last Week)
TNT and Columbian succeeded in giving Ls to the Beermen. The overwhelming talent of the team is giving a hard time to the coaching staff in putting up the right rotation. They will surely get into the semifinals but what if coach Leo Austria continue to make the wrong calls? Will their overwhelming talent be enough to win?
