In a very revealing article of Spin.ph, it was revealed how San Miguel Beermen managed to incorporate Terrence Romeo into their salary cap.
If you are not familiar with the salary cap, let me explain. The salary cap has a ceiling and a floor. No team should go over that ceiling (P50,000,000 annually for the PBA) and go under that floor (P27,000,000 annually for the PBA).
PBA also have a maximum player contract. It is P420,000 monthly, which is P5.04 million annually. No player should have a salary of more than that. In short, that salary is basically reserved for the cream of the crop players.
So, how in the hell has San Miguel kept a core of six cream-of-the-crop players who are not tied to a rookie contract?
According to SMB governor Robert Non, the majority of their top players sacrificed by reducing their salary.
One of his most shocking statement was that June Mar Fajardo is their lone player with a maximum contract!
Further, in the article, it was revealed that Romeo is only earning P200,000 because the maximum contract that he signed with Globalport in 2016 was reduced!
The reported salary-reduction is a piece of big news that none of the national media found out. Do you believe that?
Actually, I cannot remember any news about salary-reduction in the PBA in my lifetime.
Add everything and it was not surprising that a lot of fans were disappointed and did not believe the revelations from the governor of the most star-studded team in the league.
You cannot blame the fans for not believing the article that Romeo was willing to cut his salary into half because it was reported in his time in Northport that he was looking for more money. And if you check his social media, he portrays himself as a luxurious individual.
Actually, even if it is true that Romeo and the other stars of San Miguel are receiving less than the maximum, a bigger question will arise. What made them agree with it?
Human beings are born to crave for financial security, as much and as how much is possible. So, what made Arwind Santos, Alex Cabagnot, Chris Ross, Marcio Lassiter and Terrence Romeo, agree to it?
Maybe, bigger money?
But how?
if ganung swledo nyo malamang may under the table padin nyan, for now maybe pero may secret salary rin yan
