Is Jimmy Alapag the next SMB head coach?

One of the most shocking non-player movement just happened in this crazy 2018-2019 offseason! Jimmy Alapag, once the face of not only the TNT franchise but of the MVP sister teams, has accepted the assistant coaching job of the San Miguel Beermen.

So, San Miguel is not only pumping talents to their basketball roster but has also added a marquee name into their coach staff.

Other than the visual and the allure of a Jimmy Alapag, what are the three possible reasons why they hired Jimmy?

A Big Blow to MVP Group
By adding him to their coaching roster, they removed one quality coach from the options of the MVP group for the foreseeable future. That is a huge blow to the MVP group especially with the current performances of their coaching staffs in TNT and Meralco.

It is also a pretty bad look for the MVP group because it shows that they are not that capable of keeping their legends happy and stable.

A Mentor to Terrence Romeo
The addition of Jimmy could also help San Miguel reform the rumored attitude problems of Terrence Romeo. Jimmy, together with Jayson Castro, could be the two most respected point guards in the last ten years.

Although Castro failed to get Romeo under his wings, the relationship of Jimmy and Terrence will be different. It will be a coach-player relationship which is different to a player-to-player relationship. That should provide more leeway to Jimmy in mentoring Terrence.

A Possible Replacement of Coach Leo Austria
I am not a hater of coach Leo but I was really shocked that he was able to keep his job even though he only managed to lead the strongest franchise in the league to one of the three possible championships.

Coach Jimmy succeeded in leading the most powerful roster in the ASEAN Basketball League to claim the 2018 championship. That is a good indication that he can also do it for the most loaded franchise in the PBA.
