2019 PBA Coach of the Year Candidates 1.0

Last year, coach Chito Victolero was the coach of the year after leading the Magnolia Hotshots in a championship conquest in the Governors' Cup.

This season, we could be having a much closer race for the said award as Phoenix and Rain or Shine managed to get into the semifinals of the 2019 Philippine Cup.

Who are the top contenders for the award?

Let us see.

#3 Coach Tim Cone
Yes, Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel was underwhelming in the elimination round. They failed to finish in the top 2 even though they have the most accomplished coach in the league and one of the two deepest rosters today.

Nonetheless, playoffs can easily be a different story. They are currently tied with Magnolia in the quarterfinals. The way it is trending, Brgy. Ginebra will be having a healthy season, which was not the case last season. Art Dela Cruz has returned to his old form and even Greg Slaughter managed to complete the elimination round without missing a single game.

If they sustained their good health, I am willing to bet that they can win at least two championships.

#2 Mark Dickel Bong Ravena
TNT Ka Tropa is so modern that if their shots fall into the right places, they can easily get one of the crowns this season. Just look at how close their first two matches with San Miguel Beermen in the quarterfinals.

The margin of victory is a combined 7 points. What amazed me was their defense. They limited San Miguel to 80 and 88 points in game 1 and 2, respectively. The lowest output of San Miguel in the elimination round was 93 and guess who was their opponent. Yes, it was TNT.

#1 Coach Caloy Garcia
I am rooting for coach Caloy Garcia and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to succeed. Why? For the sake of the parity of the league. And I think their current roster is oozing with talent and depth. Yes, it is not comparable to San Miguel and Ginebra but in terms of pure depth, I think they can match-up.

I believe James Yap and Maverick Ahanmisi are the keys for them to shock the PBA universe. They badly to be efficient in the playoffs if they want to give Rain or Shine a chance against the big dogs.

Unfortunately for coach Caloy, it will be hard for him to get the award if his team fails to win one of the crowns.
