2019 Phil. Cup Playoffs: Biggest Breakout Player Candidates

(c) PBA Media Bureau

Now that the semifinals have started, there are already clear candidates of who will be the biggest breakout star of this playoffs.

Breakout players are the guys who exhibited the ability to play above their perceived skill levels.

So, who are the candidates?

Let me run down.

Jio Jalalon
Jio had been a part of a lot of good playoffs run by Magnolia. He already showed in the last Philippine Cup playoffs that he was more than a roster-spot in the playoffs. He can really contribute.

In the quarterfinals, we saw one game where Jio was unstoppable offensively. He erupted for 17 points on 7/12 shooting. The key for him is his three-point shooting because the guy has only connected on two long bombs in this playoffs.

Javee Mocon
Game by game, Javee is solidifying himself as the steal of the 2018 draft. If what he did in game 1 against Magnolia is an indication of what he can do moving forward, Mocon may easily become one of the faces of Rain or Shine at the end of the playoffs.

In game 1, Mocon produced 15 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists. The rookie did not play like a rookie against a playoff-seasoned team in Magnolia.

Matthew Wright
This is the first time Wright will play in the semifinals. Semifinals is way different than the elimination round. We all saw him scoring on volume in the elimination round of every conference. The question now is,, can he also do it in the playoffs?

If he can, he can further solidify himself as a legit offensive star in the game. In game 1, Matthew went for 22 points on 6/12 shooting. He also added 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Now that they have a 1-game deficit, Wright may need to further upgrade his play.
