Was replacing Chris Daniels by Alaska, a tanking move for the 2019 PBA draft?

Chris Daniels was not the most electrifying import this conference but the guy showed results. The Alaska Aces were 4-2 with him. They have beaten Meralco Bolts, Magnolia Hotshots, NLEX Road Warriors and Columbian Dyip.

Daniels averaged 21.8 points, 13.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Not the most tantalizing numbers but he did show the ability to do everything, including shooting from beyond the arc. That ability surely helped open up driving lanes for Chris Banchero who is averaging 16.3 points per game.

Their new import, Nino Johnson, produced 6 points, 3/8 FG, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals and 4 blocks! Very underwhelming for an import. His passiveness was the most glaring issue. It is not as if this is his first international stint.

When asked about Johnson's performance, coach Alex Compton said that he doesn't know what it was. He said that Nino was doing fine in their practices. His most powerful statement though was that Johnson doesn't know what they are doing.

So, why did they replaced Daniels?

Maybe it is really about an injury. They put Daniels in their Injured/Reserved list, so they can still put him back. Unfortunately, his quad injury will force him to sit out their next game.

Their next game is on Friday against the San Miguel Beermen. After that, they will have a nine-days rest because their next game is still on June 30 against Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel.

Or maybe, they have realized that the 2019 draft is the draft that is worth tanking for? Again, Isaac Go and Troy Rikes. Two promising centers who are already shooting three-pointers.

Remember that at 4 wins, they can still end up being eliminated. That will further solidify their place in the top 5.

What do you think Alaska fans? Did your team just make a tanking move?
