PBA Trade Analysis: Was Columbian-Northport a lopsided exchange?

(c) PBA Media Bureau

After weeks of being part of trade rumors, Jerramy King and Russel Escoto finally got their wishes as they are bound for their new team, Northport Batang Pier.

Here was the trade:
Northport received - Jerramy King, Russel Escoto
Columbian received - Juami Tiongson, Lervin Flores, Joseph Gabayni

Is this a fair trade? Yes. This could have been heavily in favor with Northport if not for the fact that both King and Escoto are injury prone. King just missed several months because of an injury and of course, Escoto missed a year in the past due to health issues.

TEAM ANALYSIS

Northport Batang Pier

Upgrading from Tiongson to King is a good thing to do. Looking at the guard rotation of Northport of Bolick-Mercado-Elorde-Grey-Lanete, I can see a clear role for King. King will be the best scoring guard for Batang Pier right away and he has much better size than Elorde. So, he is a much better defensive option than Nico.

Giving up two bigman, no matter how small their current roles are with your team, will still hurt. But, I understand what Northport did here because they added stretch-big with more talent in exchange for two bigman bodies. With him and Moala Tautuaa, Northport now has two stretch-bigs.

Columbian Dyip

I hope fans will not crucify the Dyip franchise again because according to the chattering, Jerramy and Russel were the ones who asked for it. Now, getting Juami Tiongson and two bigs are good value to get in return for King and Escoto.

In terms of guards, I do not think guards in the level of Tiongson has value because of the amount of supply in the market. They can easily get that kind of guard in the free-agency market. Now, getting Flores and Gabayni is a different story.

Flores is an athletic big that they could develop in the way that they nurtured Jackson Corpuz. Gabayni, on the other hand, is a solid post presence who can match-up with the giants of the league.
