2019 Rookie Power Ranking: Perez, Bolick or Parks?

The 2018 rookie batch is looking like one of the best in this decade. Yes, it could even be much better than the Gilas draft if we only consider the top of both the annual selections.

Now that Bobby Ray Parks has played a conference, who are the five contenders for the Rookie of the Year award?

#5 JP Calvo
Believe it or not but the Dyip franchise hit on their two picks in the 2018 draft. They draft Calvo who just averaged 6.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game in the Commissioner's Cup. The biggest selling point of JP is his age. He is the youngest player in the league. Which means he has a lot of years to further develop his game.

#4 Javee Mocon
Mocon has a good case to be the #3 but not enough to get there. Mocon is the do-it-all forward of this class. He is the best in stuffing the stat sheets with numbers. Mocon averaged 11.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.1 steals, 0.8 block, 42% FG and 36% 3FG per game. I hope, he can continue to build his perimeter game because that could make him a much harder to match-up with in the future.

#3 Robert Bolick
We just saw in the 2019 FIBA World Cup that Bolick is something special. He is not the most athletic, he is not the most skilled and he is not the most intelligent but he is arguably the most complete point guard in the country. I love the fact that he is not the flashiest in the court. And I love the fact that he cried when San Miguel eliminated Northport.

#2 Bobby Ray Parks
His absence in the 2019 Philippine Cup will be the reason why he will not have enough ammo to unseat the guy currently at the top of this list. Parks produced 22.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.6 steals, 41% FG, 33% 3FG and 2.1 three-pointers per game. No doubt, he will be one of the top 10 PBA players for the next decade.

#1 CJ Perez
A lot of people are still talking about his adventure in the 2019 FIBA World Cup. We basically saw CJ solidify himself as one of our flag-bearers for the next decade. He is far from the athletic freak that he once was because he now knows how to maximize his gifts. He has a big challenge in front of him and that is to carry the Dyip franchise to legitimacy. Will he succeed?
