2019 PBA Gov. Cup Power Ranking 2.0: A new #1 and #12 team!

(c) PBA Media Bureau

After two weeks of games, the race is shaping up to be a unique one. We saw a lot of lopsided games. We saw young teams delivering good wins and almost-upsets.

So, how should we rank the 12 teams? Let us see.

#12 Alaska Aces (Last Rank #7)
Justin Watts was better than I expected but his team was as bad as I feared. Looking at their team numbers, it is not good that Alaska is the team that attempting the least number of threes.

#11 NLEX Road Warriors (Last Rank #11)
NLEX is the #1 team right now. So, why are they in this spot? Remember that we are ranking them according to their ability to win the championship and knowing that Erram is injured and will be out for a long while, their chances is very deem. They are winning games, primarily because they are averaging 17.7 made-threes per game. They will not be able to keep that up.

#10 Columbian Dyip (Last Rank #12)
Now that I have confirmed that Khapri Alston is as dominant as I expected, I can now push up the Dyip in this ranking. Having a duo that can match-up against any duo of another team gives the Dyip a chance in every game.

#9 Blackwater Elite (Last Rank #6)
Marqus Blakely zap all the enthusiasm that I have for this team with his performance in their first game. Fortunately, they still have 9 games to correct their ways. I am hoping they will not waste a much better conference by Bobby Ray Parks.

#8 Phoenix Fuel Masters
(Last Rank #10)
I believe their conference will hinge on the return of Calvin Abueva. Their victory against Ginebra was a good one but not that impressive, overall. What encourages me the most is the creativity of coach Louie Alas. I think, that is what this team needs.

#7 Northport Batang Pier
(Last Rank #9)
Mychal Ammons was a little bit much better than I expected. He is averaging 21.5 points, 17.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.0 block per game. That is enough reason for them to deserve a raise in this ranking.

#6 Meralco Bolts
(Last Rank #8)
The production of Raymond Almazan makes them a very interesting team. He is averaging 18.0 points, 15.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 48% FG per game. With a productive center, Meralco may have a much better team than their last squad that reached the finals.

#5 Rain or Shine Elasto Painters
(Last Rank #5)
Rain or Shine will keep their top 5 ranking for now because I do not see another team that deserves to replace them. Although, they are not really playing that well.

#4 Magnolia Hotshots (Last Rank #3)
I am worried with the way they are playing. They are not as crisp as before. They are relying too much for their top players to create. Their depth in the frontline is being exploited. It seems like Rafi Reavis doesn't have the fuel already to play excellent defense for more than 25 minutes.
#3 Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel
(Last Rank #1)
Their disappearing act in their game against Phoenix was enough to slide them from the top spot. That is how tight the current top 3 is. Although, Ginebra is still a very interesting team, especially with a lean Greg Slaughter.

#2 TNT Ka Tropa (Last Rank #4)
KJ McDaniels is legit. Just like Terrence Jones, he is a legit NBA player who is playing in the PBA. He is so dominant that I trust him to carry TNT, deep into the playoffs.

#1 San Miguel Beermen (Last Rank #2)
Ginebra and TNT failed to show in the first two weeks that they are more deserving of this spot than the Beermen. Although, I am pessimistic with the fit of Wells' style to their team. He is not a consistent shooter who scores a lot.
