Is Phoenix Fuel Masters a sleeping giant in the PBA?

Do you remember which team had the best record after the elimination round of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup?

It was not San Miguel Beermen. It was not Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel. It was not Magnolia Hotshots. It was not TNT Ka Tropa.

It was Phoenix Fuel Masters.

They ended up reaching the semifinals where San Miguel, the giant of the giants, woke up and smashed them in a 4-1 series.

That doesn't mean that what Phoenix did was useless. That was the sign that they are on the right track. That was the sign that they now have the right core to be a legit contender in the PBA.

And then Calvin Abueva let himself get suspended.

And suddenly, the foundation of the team was not complete. So, they ended up being eliminated in the elimination round.

Now, it seems like, they have found their groove again as Eugene Phelps is back to lead them and coach Louie Alas further magnified their system.

They are also showing that they have the ability to develop players. In their surprising victory against Ginebra, Davon Potts was introduced with a vital role. We also saw Jorey Napoles having a big impact.

The ability to develop player is important, especially for independent teams.

But, for them to be fully unleashed, the Beast should return.
