Is Commissioner Marcial deserving of a three years extension?

During the annual planning of the PBA board of governors, they have decided to give commissioner Willie Marcial a new three-years extension. So, Mr. Marcial will be the head of the PBA up to 2022.

The most intriguing part of the news was that the board was unanimous. That means even the governors of the MVP group, Alaska, Rain or Shine and Phoenix were in favor of him being extended.

Does that mean that his performance in the last two years was good enough?

The value of the PBA commissioner in today's league is in how he handles trades. During his tenure, we have not seen an obvious lopsided trades but what we did observed was that SMC teams were always getting better value during exchanges.

The Stanley Pringle to Ginebra trade was the most obvious one. It was not a fair trade but it was not lopsided enough that it did not get the ire of the PBA universe. Pringle is one of the top 5 players in the PBA and Ginebra got him for three of their role players!

Commissioner Marcial bothered to asked Meralco to give additional 2nd round picks in the Allein Maliksi trade but was satisfied with the three role-players return for Pringle.

Another one is the Chris Banchero trade were a starting point guard was sent for two role players. Again, was not lopsided enough to get the ire of the PBA universe but it was obviously a win for Magnolia.

As of today though, the biggest controversy that Mr. Marcial is facing is the Calvin Abueva situation.

Why?

Because when he decided to suspend The Beast indefinitely, without a clear list of things that Abueva should do to be reinstated. He basically claimed the power of releasing the Beast.

And that is unfair for Calvin and his family. Especially with the fact that he has been doing the things that com. Marcial revealed as necessary for the suspension to be lifted.

Overall though, I am fine with him getting an extension because at least, we are not having obvious lopsided trades.

And I believed that he is one of the reason why CJ Perez is still in Columbian and Standhardinger is still in Northport. If he can manage to retain those two on their current teams for at least this season, that will be one of his biggest achievement as a commissioner.
