Is Greg Slaughter of Ginebra the most underrated PBA player today?

Can anyone imagine what Greg Slaughter is feeling right now? I am pretty sure he is aware of the current craving of majority of Ginebra fans.

They want him out for Christian Standhardinger. They are tired of his slow pace style. They are tired of him being outrebounded by smaller players. They wanted the more energetic and easier to root for style of Standhardinger.

This situation is so ironic because in the PBA, height is still might. And Greg? He is the tallest and the biggest player in the league.

Unfortunately for Greg Slaughter, he just delivered his worst season production in the PBA. He produced 9.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 0.9 assist, 0.9 block and 51% FG per game.

That was his first season of producing single digit in points, below 8 and 1 in rebounds and assist, respectively. Of course, the #1 reason for that is his playing time of 22.8 minutes per game, the lowest in his career.

Now, if you only look at the per game numbers, it is easy to say that Greg deserves to be replaced. But, how about the advance stats?

In terms of offensive (ORating) and defensive rating (DRating), Greg is still one of the most impactful player in the league. For 2019, his ORating and DRating were 106.2 and 100.9, respectively.

The difference between the two is called Net Rating, so he has 5.3 for the season. That 5.3 simply means that per 100 possession, when Greg was in the court, Ginebra outscored the opponent by 5.3 points.

By the way, that is the lowest one for Greg and if you compare it to other elite centers out there, that still stand out. For example, Ian Sangalang's Net Rating this season was 0.8 and in his career, his highest mark was 5.8!

One last thing that you need to consider is, Greg is not on the right team to maximize his size. He needs a lot of shooting around him and Ginebra has the least number of average shooter in their roster.

So, I think it is a good claim to say that Greg is now the most underrated player in the league. Especially with the number of fans who cannot see his worth inside the court.

So, you know what. I hope the rumor of him landing on TNT will happen because I think, he has what it takes to make million of Ginebra fans regret what they are wishing right now.
