Is Gabe Norwood Underrated or Overrated?

If you will ask any PBA fan out there about how good Gabe Norwood is, I am pretty sure they will tell you that he is an elite player. There is a reason why he was one of the core players of our national team for almost a decade.

But how about a player who averaged 7.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.1 steals, 37% FG and 27% 3FG from 2011 to 2019?

Is that guy an elite player? Should he be playing for our national team?

It is easy to say Gabe is an elite player because of the historical context. He is a well-respected player and has been part of our national team for a very long time. But as the number shows, there is also a good chance that you are overrating the guy.

Without looking at the numbers, it is easy to assume that Gabe should be averaging at least 10 points a game for a while now. But the guy is actually a horrendous scorer for his entire career.

He is so awful with it that every shot that he took was a bad shot, on average.

But the advance numbers show us that what made him special was the other things that he offers on the table.

His net rating from 2011 to 2019 is + 6.025. It means that combining every minute that he was on the floor and converting it to per 100 possessions, his team was outscoring the opponent by 6.025 points!

That was an excellent mark. Now, how did Gabe do that with a very bad efficiency?

It is the combination of his basketball IQ, playmaking and vision on offense and his elite defense.

So, going back to the question, is the guy underrated or overrated? You can play around it but I think the safest will be in the middle. He was properly rated.
