Gilas 2023: Abueva and Slaughter want to be part of Gilas 2023, what should they do?

In the past few months, two prominent PBA players told the basketball universe of the Philippines that they want to be part of the 2023 Gilas.

That 2023 Gilas will battle for us in the FIBA World Cup which will be co-hosting. It is an historic event that may not happen again this century. So, it was not shocking that two players already sent their desire to take part in it.

Greg Slaughter said that the team that he is really looking forward to playing for, was not Ginebra but Gilas.

Same with Calvin who told former PBA commissioner Noli Eala in Power and Play that he wants to give back to Filipinos by playing in the national team.

The question is, what should they do to return?

For Calvin, the first step to a possible return is to do everything to be reinstated in the league. It seems like he is a few steps away. One thing though that he should make sure is not to do anymore controversial thing, because another misstep will surely result in another suspension.

For Greg, returning to the camp of the San Miguel Corporation could be risky for his plan to play for Gilas. We are not really sure about the effect of the pandemic but it could actually ignite the SMC and MVP rivalry.

But other than those things, both players need the same skill that will surely help them get the nod for a spot in the team.

I am talking about three-point shooting. That has been the Achilles heel of Calvin in his career. It will be hard for our team to play a wing that will not help in spacing the floor.

On the other hand, having our biggest player capable of hitting three-pointers could open a lot of possibilities for our offense.

I hope Calvin and Greg will do their best to do the things that they should accomplish.
