PBA Controversy: Did coach Tim Cone underrate the COVID-19 quarantine violation of Japeth Aguilar?

We finally heard the reaction of coach Tim Cone about the violation of Japeth Aguilar of the quarantine protocols last June. Japeth, together with other PBA players, joined a 5-on-5 scrimmage, which was not allowed by the guidelines.

When asked about it, coach Tim Cone was quoted by Spin.ph saying,

One of the things that we try to impress upon the players and Japeth of course, is the fact that we are Ginebra. And the fact that we are Ginebra, we are a high-profile team, and so it is for us as a group to set the standard, to be the models on how you should be doing things... And I told them the moment you step out of the line, the moment you start doing your own thing or doing something against, it’s going to come out of the press and people will be going to make a big deal about it.

I think the point of coach Tim Cone was clear. He is reiterating that Ginebra players should lead in following the protocols because they are part of the most popular team in the league. That by doing it, they will help in encouraging other Filipinos to follow the guidelines.

However, I am not happy about the last sentence. He is basically implying that the reaction of the media and the fans about what Japeth did was exaggerated.and that is not warranted.

I disagree. The reaction of the media and the fans with what Japeth and the others did was just right. Japeth and his fellow violators actually committed a severe violation if we talk about the nature of the virus. It was not forced to be discussed as a big deal.

It was a big deal! Lives are on the line. I am not only talking about the lives of teams in a basketball tournament. I am talking about human lives.

If you say that I am overreacting about what coach Tim said, then you are implying that a protocol violation when the lives of the public are at risk should not be taken seriously!

Again. This is about human lives. Let us take it seriously.
