PBA & COVID-19: Should PBA cancel the 2020 season, already?

After a week of good news for the PBA, reality came down crashing hard to the league as President Rodrigo Duterte decided to bring back Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine in NCR, Laguna, Rizal, Cavite and Bulacan.

The MECQ will be applied to the said region and province from August 4 to August 18, 2020. So, the commissioner said that they are now pushing back the date of the swab tests for team players and personnel that was meant to be the precursor for their return to practice.

One thing that has been made clear at this point is that the PBA will be playing in NCR because they actually have the option to try it on other provinces with a lower number of cases.

If that is the case, then they may start to really consider the possibility that they will not play another game this year.

The reality is, the MECQ is not guaranteed to end by August 18, 2020. Especially with the fact that DOH has a lot of backlogs in their testing.

In short, NCR may not be the right place for the PBA to play in. If they really want to play, they should start considering other places.

With only five months to go and with the earliest possible return could be around October, PBA should really think about canceling the season.

At this point, they cannot recoup their losses in the past few months. And the risk that they could tarnish their image with their planned return is real.
