PBA Hot Take: Is Mark Caguioa still worth the roster spot for Ginebra?

The retirement of PJ Simon left Mark Caguioa as the only representative of the 2001 PBA draft. That draft was headlined by Willie Miller, Mike Hrabak and Caguioa. Other notables in that draft were Roger Yap and John Arigo.

Now, knowing that Caguioa is now the only player from that draft, I featured him in the FRIDAY FRY DAY of our Facebook page (SEE HERE) and almost all of those who commented were asking for his retirement.

That begs the question in my mind if he is still deserving of a roster spot.

Last season, he produced 2.8 points, 1.4 rebounds, 0.5 assist, 43% FG and 33% 3FG per game. He was given 7.6 minutes per game and he received a lot of DNP (Did Not Play).

In short, his value is not really connected to what he can provide in the court. It is more of what he meant to his teammates.

Scottie Thompson said in 2016 that he was a big fan of Mark Caguioa. I am pretty sure Mark has been a good adviser for Scottie.

One of their rookies, Arvin Tolentino, also looks up to him. And that admiration could be important in molding the career of Arvin into a good one.

Actually, coach Tim Cone speaks highly about Arvin. The reason why he fell in the draft was his personality and rumored attitude problem.

So, that admiration for Caguioa could help Arvin focused more on what is important. Mark could also advise him, especially on the aspect of humbleness.

Overall, if Mark can actually help in leading Arvin to his ceiling, his roster spot is worth it.
