PBA Analysis: Should San Miguel Beermen consider tanking for the 2020 PBA draft?

San Miguel Beermen keeps losing players for this 2020 PBA bubble. June Mar Fajardo was injured before the season even started. Matthew Ganuelas-Rosser cannot come back to the country on time. And now, Terrence Romeo was forced out of Clark, Pampanga due to an injury.

After Terrence exit, coach Leo Austria was asked about his remaining roster and he told the media that they are re-evaluating their campaign plan.

What does that mean?

A core five of Chris Ross, Alex Cabagnot, Marcio Lassiter, Arwind Santos and Moala Tautuaa, still looks credible to make a deep playoff run.

But, how about taking advantage of the fact that we are just two to three months away from next season. And that this short tournament will determine the draft order for the 2020 PBA draft.

Am I suggesting that they tank their remaining games? Not really.

But I think, they should consider making sure that their old veterans like Cabagnot, Lassiter, Santos and Ross stay away from too much physical stress and provide ample opportunity to their younger players like Von Pessumal, Gelo Alolino, Wendel Comboy and Russel Escoto.

Doing that will surely result into a better draft pick than usual, maybe in the range of #5 to #8, and that could open up the possibility of taking a high-quality prospect. And it could even be a bigman.

Some of the possible names that could be available in that range are Justine Baltazar (if the draft is very deep), Troy Rike, Santi Santillan, Larry Muyang and Jeo Ambohot.

Now, if they end up with a prime young big, that will now give them a trade piece that they can use in creating an acceptable trade package for CJ Perez.

Remember the CJ Perez to Beermen trade rumor?

In short, San Miguel could sacrifice this very short season to elongate their dominance in the next decade.
