PBA Hot Take: Is Calvin Abueva the Robert Jaworski of the bubble?

Have you heard the news? Yes, Calvin Abueva is back on the PBA and he erupted in his first game against the NLEX Road Warriors.

He made 21 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 turnovers and 1 steal in that game. I am pretty sure you saw the game and he looks like he did not miss a bit even if he was not able to play for almost one-and-a-half year.

But with all that has happened to him, it seems like more PBA fans are now behind the guy. The evidence was the running number of views of their game against NLEX. As of the writing of this article, it is at 800,000 level.

Yes. The Manila Classico was at a higher level of 1,000,000 but of course, that was Manila Clasico! Phoenix-NLEX managed to come near the level of Manila Clasico even though NLEX and Phoenix are not that popular teams. How did it happen?

The return of Calvin Abueva.

Am I the only one who feels like Abueva is emitting the same aura that Robert Jaworski did a few decades ago? I am not saying that he will ever reach the popularity of Robert but in terms of his connection to the fans and the way he envigorates the PBA universe,  I think he is the closest ever to how Jawo did it.

Jawo was the most popular player in his playing days, and maybe even in the history of the league. But he was also hated by his competitor.

Just like Calvin Abueva today.

Jawo plays his heart out.

Calvin does it too.

Jawo gave life to the Never Say Die spirit.

Will Calvin create a new one in this bubble?
