Today, we will see the end of two amazing semifinals series. Ginebra will try to continue their mastery over Meralco Bolts. While Phoenix will have a chance to surprise the PBA universe by defeating the most loaded team in the bubble, TNT Ka Tropa.
So, we have four possible final match-ups. How about ranking them as to which should be the most beneficial for the PBA's future?
I think the most important for the PBA is to balance the hype/popularity of the league and its parity. Ginebra in the finals will always bring a lot of eyeballs but is it sustainable? There are a lot of PBA fans who gave up on the PBA because they already concluded that only a few companies are really running it.
Thus, to get those dejected PBA fans, the league should try to achieve a good level of parity.
So, here is the ranking.
#4 TNT - Meralco
I think the hype for this match-up in the finals is just so low compared to the other choices that it is hard to consider. It will also not help that it will just further increase the belief that the league is run by the SMC and MVP groups and this is just MVP's turn.
#3 Phoenix - Meralco
This is a very interesting match-up because it will be a battle of two franchises who have failed to win a championship in the PBA. But, I do not think the median of its hype and the benefit in improving parity is better than the top 2.
#2 Ginebra - TNT
I believed that this will be the most hyped match-up because it still has the most recognizable names in the league. I am pretty sure Ginebra fans will enjoy hating on Ray Parks. Also, it will be good to test again the rivalry between SMC and MVP. Can MVP finally end their losing streak to SMC teams in the finals?
#1 Ginebra - Phoenix
I consider this match-up as the most-balance in terms of hype and parity. With Calvin Abueva and Matthew Wright on the Phoenix side, their fanbase is slowly growing. There are a lot of Ginebra fans who appreciate what Abueva and Phoenix are doing. I will not be shocked if they can catch some of them as a fan of this series happens.
Lastly, I believed that a Phoenix win over Ginebra in the finals will catapult them into a good status in the league. I think it could reignite the dwindling passion of the dejected fans because a new team managed to beat powerhouse squads from SMC and MVP.
