Sol Mercado will end up as one of the biggest what if in the history of the PBA. You may not remember already but Sol once led the league in scoring and assists in an entire conference!
That type of fit is unseen now unless we are talking about imports.
Unfortunately, Mercado never found a home. And the 2021 season began with him still on the sideline, waiting for a team to fetch him out of the free-agency.
The reality is, the biggest hindrance to his signing is the rule of maximum five Filipino-Foreigners in a team.
I am pretty sure there are several teams out there who are willing to sign him but they cannot give up one of their current Filipino-Foreigner players.
According to PBA on the Go, Rain or Shine, TNT and Meralco are interested to sign him. Ginebra, on the other hand, has not offered a contract to him.
But looking at the current bench of Ginebra, I wonder why the management cannot see a place for him. Sol has embraced being a role player in Ginebra.
If they sign him, he is right away the best defender off their bench. And if Ginebra cannot cure their problem in spacing, how about empowering their main weapon, defense?
Mercado is also a cerebral player, capable of handling tight situations, which is a usual occurence in the offense of Ginebra.
