PBA Analysis: Did SMB traded for an overrated CJ Perez?

The first day of the resumption of the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup ended up being memorable as Meralco Bolts delivered a miracle victory against Magnolia.

While Terrafirma Dyip shocked the entire PBA universe by wielding the upset ax against the San Miguel Beermen.

A lot of fans are shocked because they know the relationship of Beermen and Dyip. The Dyip franchise has sent two superstars to San Miguel, already. And rumors are still swirling that they will soon do it again.

During the game, one guy stands out for San Miguel, but not in a good way. Of course, I am talking about CJ Perez, who was the back-to-back scoring champ playing for the Dyip franchise.

CJ produced 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover, 3/7 FG and 0/1 from beyond the arc. He was only given 24:25 playing time.

For a superstar scorer who should be familiar with the tendencies of his former teammates, that production is really bad.

What is actually worrying is the fact that coach Leo Austria is just letting him do what he wanted, to focus on scoring.

CJ is a superb creator. And instead of becoming a magnificent player in opening up advantages, CJ is usually forcing things.

The reality is, CJ is not overrated. But, there is a chance that he is misused by the coaching staff.
