PBA Analysis: Alaska is making a mistake?

There is no denying in my mind that Alaska Aces has been the biggest surprise in the first week of the second tournament of this PBA season.

They defeated Northport Batang Pier and San Miguel Beermen. While they also managed to give Barangay Ginebra San Miguel a run for their money, even though it was already their third game and Ginebra was just having their first.

Alaska though is not having a good time on their offense. They are winning it because of their defense. They limit their opponent to 86.3 points, 18.0 assists, 40% FG and 25% 3FG per game.

But, I think there is a good argument that the management should be careful with the rush of the blood of trying to compete.

They clearly need two things right now even with their good showing in the first week of this tournament. A starting quality point guard and a player that can consistently break down the defense.

Those guys will surely be available on the upcoming PBA draft. But, the best of them will be available in the upper half of the draft.

Winning a lot of games now will push their upcoming draft pick, lower. This means the opportunity to get a young star that they need will also be lower.

Especially that Phoenix Super LPG is also doing well in this early part of the tournament. Alaska hold the 1st of Phoenix.
