In a very surprising decision, Ginebra decided to put Aljon Mariano into the Unrestricted Free Agency. It means that Aljon can now sign with any team that he wants to.
The question is, will he do that?
When asked about the decision of Ginebra of letting him go, his agent, Marvin Espiritu assured the fans that there is nothing to worry about because Aljon is happy with the team.
The decision of Ginebra to sign John Pinto and their plethora of injuries may have forced them to push Aljon into the UFA.
Although, it is still very interesting that they decided to push him out instead of the guys that they are not even using at all.
Nevertheless, the statement of his agent is actually creepy to me. Is he implying that Aljon is still with Ginebra and him being sent to UFA is just a wink-wink deal? Like, Ginebra will find a way to open up a roster spot for him once he is healed.
I have an issue with that because of the should-be contract situation of Aljon. Being relegated to UFA actually means that he is not already under contract with Ginebra.
Although, they can agree to the settlement of the contract. Like, they could agree that the contract is still in power even though he is not already part of the roster.
This is risky though for Ginebra because if that is their agreement, Aljon can sign with another team and sign another contract and that contract with Ginebra should still be enforced. Unless the contract structures of PBA players to their teams give a lot of advantage to the team.
