Believe it or not but the biggest winner of this ongoing free agency is not Ginebra, San Miguel, TNT or Magnolia.
It will be Meralco Bolts after acquiring the biggest name in this unrestricted free-agency period, Christopher Banchero.
Phoenix Super LPG offered a 3-years max to Banchero but that was not enough for him to remain with them.
Chris is currently having his best tournament so far in his PBA career, averaging 18.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 55% FG and 39% 3FG per game.
Actually, there is a good argument that he is the best player on Phoenix during this 2022 Governors' Cup. Yes, better than Matthew Wright.
Meralco actually lost a point guard through free agency in John Pinto. But, all things should be fine now because Banchero is a way better player than John. So, in a way, they may have indirectly tricked Ginebra in targeting the worse baller in Pinto. Making it easier for them to grab Chri.
As seen by his numbers, Banchero is a good guard on both ends of the court. His defense is really underrated.
Offensively, I can now expect him to be the guy for Meralco if Chris Newsome continues to be more of a do-it-all guard.
With this huge upgrade in talent, Meralco is now a much better challenger for the title.
