2022 PBA Draft Grades: Ginebra got a steal?

For our initial draft grades, we will just provide our grade for the 1st round picks. The grades will be from A to F, with A as the highest and F as the lowest.

Take note that we are grading the process of making the choice, not the player chosen. It means that making a consensus pick will result to a D, the average grade.

#1 Blackwater - Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser

This is an easy pick. After Justine Baltazar withdrew and with the PBA not allowing Sedrick Barefield to enter, Brandon was no doubt the best choice for Blackwater.

Grade: D

#2 Terrafirma - Jeremiah Gray

The injury of Jeremiah that could keep him on the sideline for the entirety of the upcoming season has created questions about his worth as the #2 pick of this draft. The depth of the draft though is still clearly pointing to him as the best available for this spot, especially for a team that is far away from contetion.

Grade: A

#3 Converge - Jeo Ambohot

Even though Ambohot is having a fine final season for Letran, he failed to garner hype to be mocked as a top 3 pick for this draft. I think Converge did the right thing here and Jeo has the right skillset and mindset to be something special.

Grade: B

#4 Converge - Justin Arana

After the pick of Jeo, people expected Converge to go for a non-bigman. Fortunately, they went with the right second choice and that is Justin. Arana is easily the most hyped homegrown player in this draft because of his performance in NCAA. The decision of Converge to go for two bigs is excellent.

Grade: B

#5 Rain or Shine: Gian Mamuyac

Unfortunately for Rain or Shine, this draft is surprisingly lacking scoring firepower that they badly need. Gian's biggest selling point was the improvement of his game. He can take the same path as Kib Montalbo.

Grade: C

#6 Northport - JM Calma

The best bigman available at this point and knowing that there is almost zero chance already that Greg Slaughter will return, targeting a bigman is the right thing to do for Northport.

Grade: B

#7 NLEX - Tyrus Hill

According to NLEX, they are going to take the best available talent. Choosing Hill over Javi Gomez de Liano is very interesting. Tyrus has the physical and athletic attributes to become a starter in the league.

Grade: C

#8 Ginebra - Javi Gomez de Liano

At this point of the draft, Javi and Encho Serrano are the biggest name available. Choosing Javi is fine knowing their need for a three-point shooter. Can he become the modern version of Tony Dela Cruz for coach Tim Cone?

Grade: B

#9 Blackwater - Kurt Lojera

Blackwater'should be taking the best swings in this draft. I do not think Kurt is that swing at this point. Shaun Ildefonso or Encho Serrano are better swings for Blackwater.

Grade: E

#10 Rain or Shine - Shaun Ildefonso

The wing position is not really that big of a need for Rain or Shine. I am wondering if reaching for a bigman is actually the better choice at this point, in terms of risk and reward.

Grade: D

#11 Blackwater - Mark Dyke

Dyke is an interesting prospect but there is no question that Serrano is the available prospect at this point with the highest potential. And potential should be the target of Blackwater.

Grade: F

#12 Magnolia - Keith Zaldivar

A fine choice for Magnolia. He has good size and already willing to take three-point shots. I think there are several bigs still available that have more hype than Keith but in terms of fit, Keith is the best.

Grade: B
