Gilas Highlights: Ginebra legend and Jordan Clarkson together in the 2023 FIBA World Cup?

The question of whether Jordan Clarkson or Justin Brownlee should serve as the naturalized player for the Philippine men's national team in the FIBA World Cup has sparked discussions. PBA Board chairman Ricky Vargas envisions a scenario where both players can contribute to Gilas Pilipinas.

Vargas, during a lunch meeting prior to the PBA Board's annual planning session, expressed his desire to have both Clarkson and Brownlee on the team. His suggestion involves Clarkson taking on the role of the naturalized player, while Brownlee plays as a local player if FIBA regulations permit it.

Vargas acknowledges the residency rule imposed by FIBA, particularly in relation to Brownlee, who has been a mainstay in the Philippines since 2016 when he first played for Barangay Ginebra in the Governors Cup. While he recognizes the appeal made by the SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas) to have Clarkson reconsidered as a local player, Vargas believes that door is already closed.

Despite the World Cup being just a few months away, Vargas suggests that it would be more feasible to elevate Brownlee's case before FIBA. Brownlee was officially naturalized in January and has already represented Gilas in the final window of the World Cup qualifier and led the Philippines to a gold medal in basketball at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia.

Vargas's proposal aims to maximize the talents of both Clarkson and Brownlee, creating a dynamic combination for Gilas Pilipinas. However, the final decision ultimately lies with the SBP and their ability to navigate the regulations set by FIBA.
