Gilas Controversy: Kai Sotto deserves the HATE for NOT Committing to Gilas Pilipinas?

Kai Sotto is hesitant to make any commitments with Gilas Pilipinas following his departure from the Orlando Magic's NBA Summer League game against the Boston Celtics due to back pain. While Gilas coach Chot Reyes expects Sotto to join the national team's practice on Tuesday based on conversations with his camp, Sotto remained non-committal about the matter after the Magic's loss to the Celtics, which concluded their winless Summer League campaign.

Sotto expressed the difficulty of providing a definite answer, citing the continuous nature of his basketball journey since last year without much of a break to take care of his body. The persistent back pain, which he has been managing since his time with the Hiroshima Dragoflies in Japan, further complicates his availability for Gilas.

"I will still consider it," Sotto mentioned regarding his participation with Gilas. He emphasized the need to prioritize his back's well-being and mentioned plans for rehabilitation upon his return. Ultimately, Sotto will assess his condition and make a decision accordingly.

This is sad. When he signed with a Japan B League team, he said that it will not be a problem with his availability for Gilas. When he decided to try the NBA Summer League, he again vowed that his availability for Gilas will not be affected.

Suddenly, he may not be available.

But at the end of the day, if his future career is really at risk, Kai should choose to treat his health. Even though that will mean that he will not play in a once-in-a-life-time basketball tournament.
